He smiles warmly
With fists clenched deep in his pockets.

Conversation flows freely
Yet intimate thoughts never pass his lips.

Peering through a veil of bravado and self-confidence
He fears the eyes of knowledge.

Wrapped in the arms of a lover
He is alone.

A Woman in Love

I heard she was beautiful.
Her hair would fly like a kite on the wind
Raven strands glittering amber in the sun.
You said so.

Her laughter came easily
Her arms held firmly
Her love flowed freely.
You said so.

I’ve sought her out.
At places you said she loved.
The pier at sundown.
The carousel on rainy days.
The park on autumn afternoons.

I remember her – faintly
While catching a glimpse of lovers passing.
But it only makes me miss her more
Why did she leave me
So incapable of being anything like her?

Carousel, Flying Horses

For a quarter
Flying horses in flowered bridals
Sweep you away.

Music fills the air
As you catch glimpses of children’s smiles
In paneled mirrors
Gliding round ‘n round
Ever so gently.

There’s always another chance
To reach that golden ring.

The Carousel still turns
On rainy Sundays.

You Are Naples

I hear your heartbeat
While strolling on cobblestone streets through town.
I feel your hand caress my cheek
In the warm breeze off the Bay.

There’s a pink house with green wooden shutters in the fishing village below.
Boats rock softly in the water.
Watching from the balcony it soothes me.
The chime of a lonely church bell cuts sharply through the night
marking the passage of time.

I fight my need for closure.
A need you’ll never feel.
You never opened your heart.

Still I want you near as your memory taunts me
and I strive to resolve my muddled emotions.

Watching lights flicker in the distance,
I no longer feel alone
While reliving our relationship
Through the charm of Sorrento
The romance of Ravello
The passion and fury of Vesuvious
And the ruins we’ve left behind, in Pompeii.

You see my love, you are here with me.
As I finally make peace with you in my heart
Cradled, in the Bay of Naples.

May you always find mountains to climb
And the strength to reach the top.

May you always hear music to dance to
And your heart be light enough to sing along.

May you be comforted by steady hands to hold
And find peace in the arms that surround you.

May you always hear laughter that feeds your soul
And feel the stillness that calms it.

And in that calm…
May you always hear the wisdom of the whispers
that guide us through our days…
